There are two types of block paving-
  • Concrete paving
  • Clay paving
The main difference between this two types is that the clay bricks have to be baked in the kiln while the concrete bricks have to be set.

How to Lay Block Paving

There are certain steps to lay block paving St Albans. Have a look-
  1. Design-The first thing you need to do while laying block paving is to draw a suitable design. There are certain questions you need to ask yourself-
    • Do you want to replace or extend your existing driveway?
    • Do you want to landscape the front of your house for low maintenance?
These are the factors that you should decide before laying block paving. Don’t forget to pick colours different than house bricks’ colour.
  2. Excavation-Know the size of the job and then pick mini excavator or a JCB to excavate the present driveway. This will save your time. While excavating, you should dig out the area you needed and go for paving. Once you are done, go for next excavating. During excavating, you should create a little slope for water clearance.
  3. Edge Restraints-The next step is to create a concrete foundation. For that, you need to mix cement and ballast in 1:6 ratio while the depth is 100mm thick. The edge restraint will be placed on it after deciding the level of it. Do it with a string line and spirit level. When you set the curbs at the right position, make the back of the unit a little slanting so that the concrete reaches the half of the curb.
  4. Subbase-Preparing the subbase is the next step. Lay the Type one concrete inside the curb and prepare the level you want it to be. Try to make it 50mm thick. Use a vibrating plate to level it. You may need to press the vibrating plate seven times to make the concrete completely smooth and level.
  5. Screeding-Once you get smooth layer of concrete, layer it with a bit of damp sharp sand of 50mm and again level it by using vibrating plate.
  6. Install Paving-Start paving from the bottom of the slope and prefer to start from straight edge or right angle. Place the blocks carefully on top of the laying course so that the blocks remain 10-15mm above the desired finished level. Choose your pattern and continue paving.
Once you are done with block paving, sweep the area well so that there remains no debris. To beautify your house, block paving is a very good choice and it will keep you away from regular maintenance.
